WHEELER OPERA HOUSE, TOLEDO, OH

Soon after Lyman Wheeler passed away in 1866, there was a general agreement among his heirs to build an Opera House at the NW corner of Monroe and St Clair street, the property owned by the family since 1836. The Wheeler Opera house opened on December 15, 1871, with Parepa Rosa’s English Opera Company in "Bohemian Girl" and "Martha". There was a four-hour lineup at the box office, and by noon two-thirds of the tickets for both performances had been sold.

We are in the process of compiling the history of the old Wheeler Opera House, which burned down in a spectacular fire on St Patrick's day, March 17, 1893, an event that was long remembered by Toledo citizens. If you have information or photographs to offer, please email Webmaster jmec21@gmail.com
