Maumee River

Walking along Monroe, past the Fort Industry Block, leads to the banks of Maumee river. The river empties into Lake Erie a few miles from here. Lyman Wheeler first came to Toledo in 1836. He had moved from Winhall, VT to Hannibal, NY (where he met Maria Aiken), and again to Buffalo, NY where he established a business selling books. He moved west again, just as Toledo was opening up for settlement. He probably landed right at this spot in 1835-36 and bought land just two blocks away at the corner of Monroe and St. Clair.
