Karinkallichira, Mulakulam

The lock known as Karinkallichira (granite lock), controls the irrigation and flood waters into Piravam Puncha. According to local folklore, this little device is at least 1000 years old. The size and workmanship of the granite stones used to construct this is impressive. This lock is still in operation. The rules for operating this are guided by custom and tradition. If rice cultivation continues, this lock may be around for another 1000 years or more. Karinkallichira is popular among local amateur fishing enthusiasts. A net is visible in the picture, right at the weir.
